Bill Ford For almost two decades, there was no Ford running Ford Motor Company. After Henry Ford II stepped down as chairman in 1979, only professional managers were allowed into the top position. Finally, in 1998, the company declared that chairman Alex Trotman would step down a year earlier than expected to let William Clay Bill Ford, Jr. (born 1957), assume control, with Jacques Jac Nasser functioning as president and chief executive officer. Though his name was probably one reason that, at age 41, he was promoted to lead the worlds second-largest industrial firm, Ford still had to work his way up from the bottom and prove his mettle. I recognize that there are those who think this job was handed to me, Ford remarked to Keith Naughton in Business Week. But I was under the microscope every step of the way. I had to have drive and ambition because people were looking for me to fail. Fords immediate mission, in addition to making sure the company remained economically competitive, was to infuse environmental activism into the number two car corporation. He had made it no secret that he hoped to combine his personal devotion to environmental issues with his new position, thereby producing cleaner, more efficient vehicles. In addition to his career at the automaker, Ford in 1995 took charge of running the Detroit Lions football team for his father, who bought the team in 1964.

Office Depot, Delray Beach, Florida, announced it would both build and open its first Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design-certified (LEED[R]-certified) retail store in Austin, Texas, in mid-2008. The Washington, D.C.-based U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) sets the standards for green buildings, developing its LEED Green Building Rating System[TM] in 2000. The LEED system is the nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction and operation of high-performance green buildings. Office Depot has successfully implemented a number of environmental construction initiatives over the past few years, said Costa. We see both our membership in the U.S. Green Building Council and our long-term strategy of having a retail store prototype LEED-certified as examples of Office Depots environmental vision to increasingly buy green, be green and sell green.

Political Economy of Money and Finance Macmillan, London; and St. Martins Press, New York, 1999. This is an exceedingly important book. it is probably the most important contribution to the Marxian theory of money, credit and finance to appear in English since the translation of Suzanne de Brunhoffs Marx on Money in 1976. Itoh and Lapavitsas book includes a wealth of information, superb literature reviews, profound analyses of the historical evidence and substantiated discussions of controversial policy issues, whose digestion will keep even the most demanding readers busy for a long time. Their argument is invariably thorough, and their research ranges widely, and admirably, from the logical and historical origins of money to free banking, and from long wave theories to socialist money. In spite of its virtues, and partly because of them, this book will probably not become an icon of the literature, although it will certainly become a major reference in the field (which may well be a better option). The reason is simple: Itoh and Lapavitsas probe very deeply into Marxs theory of money and credit, marshal evidence widely, and engage in a wide variety of debates, not least with Marx himself (eg., they criticise certain aspects of Marxs theory of money, on pp.37-40, and credit, on pp.64-5). As their work is very ambitious, complex and controversial, it is unlikely to be universally acclaimed.

The What It Takes television spot focuses on how it takes a person with truly special and unique qualities — from patience and dedication to a sense of humor — to handle the day-to-day challenges of running a small business. Recognizing small business owners are stretched for time and lack the resources of large corporations, the MasterCard ad captures real-life small business moments such as working odd hours and dealing with faulty office equipment. MasterCards What It Takes commercial salutes people in business for themselves, while also demonstrating why MasterCard business cards are the most effective way to pay for all the things a small business needs. A corresponding print ad is slated to break later this summer in publications such as Fortune, New York Times Magazine, TIME and The Wall Street Journal. The creative used in the print versions will follow the What It Takes theme leveraged in the new television commercial. Both the television and print ads are designed to build awareness of MasterCards suite of solutions created specifically for small business owners. To address the needs of this target market, MasterCard developed MasterCard Working for Small Business, a comprehensive global program that provides small businesses with payment cards, online tools and other resources that deliver financial control, data management, analysis and reporting, along with rewards and benefits.

epoch has recognised that there are things pleasing to contemplate independently of the desire we may feel for them. He has no preconceived definition of beauty. Beauty and art were not always so closely related as today: beauty belonged originally to nature, not to created things. This book is therefore a history of Beauty and not a history of art (or of literature or music. Somewhat ironically, however, ideas of beauty are here mainly illustrated by works of art and not, for example, by loaves of beautifully made bread or beautifully laid brick walls. Images and textual selections work together to show that there is no absolute concept of beauty in things or men but criteria shaped by different eras and places.
We are at the Bargello in Florence, and she says, What are you thinking? and I say, Beauty, thinking of how very far we are now from the machine shop and the dry fields of Kansas, the treeless horizons of slate skies and the muted passions of roughnecks and scrabble farmers drunk and romantic enough to weep more or less silently at the darkened end of the bar out of, what else, loneliness, meaning the ache of thwarted desire, of, in a word, beauty, or rather its absence, and it occurs to me again that no male member of my family has ever used this word in my hearing or anyone elses except in reference, perhaps, to a new pickup or dead deer. By God, Henry, thats a beauty. This insight, this backward vision, first came to me as a young man, a boy really, as some weirdness of the airwaves slipped through the static of our new Motorola with a discussion of beauty between Robert Penn Warren and Paul Weiss at Yale College. We were in Kansas eating barbecue-flavored potato chips and waiting for Father Knows Best to float up through the snow of rural TV in 1963. I felt transported, stunned. Here were two grown men discussing beauty seriously and with dignity as if they and the topic were as normal as normal topics of discussion between men, such as soybean prices or why the commodities market was a suckers game or Oklahoma football or Gimpy Neiderland almost dying from his hemorrhoid operation. They were discussing beauty and tossing around allusions to Plato and Aristotle and someone named Pater, and they might be homosexuals. That would be a natural conclusion, of course, since here were two grown men talking about beauty instead of scratching their crotches and cursing the goddamned government trying to run everybodys business. Not a beautiful thing, that. The government. Not beautiful, though a man would not use that word. One time my Uncle Ross from California called my moms Sunday dinner centerpiece lovely, and my father left the room, clearly troubled by the word lovely, coupled probably with the very idea of California and the fact that my Uncle Ross liked to tap-dance. The light from the venetian blinds, the autumn, silver Kansas light laving the table that Sunday, is what I recall now because it was beautiful, though I of course would not have said so then, beautiful, as so many moments forgotten but later remembered come back to us in slants and pools and uprisings of light, beautiful in itself, but more beautiful mingled with memory, the light leaning across my mothers carefully set table, across the empty chair beside my Uncle Ross, the light filtering down from the green plastic slats in the roof of the machine shop where I worked with my father so many afternoons, standing or crouched in pools of light and sweat with men who knew the true meaning of labor and money and other hard, true things and did not, did not ever, use the word beauty.Late November, shadows gather in the shops north end, and Im watching Bobby Sudduth do piecework on the Hobbs. He fouls another cut, Motherfucker, fucking bitch machine, and starts over, sloppy, slow, about two joints away from being fired, but he just doesnt give a shit. He sets the bit again, white wrists flashing in the lamplight and showing botched, blurred tattoos, both from a night in Tijuana, and continues his sexual autobiography, Thats right, fucked my own sister, and Ill tell you, bud, it wasnt bad. Later, in the Philippines, the clap: As far as Im concerned, any man who hasnt had V.D. just isnt a man. I walk away, knowing I have just heard the dumbest remark ever uttered by man or animal. The air around me hums in a dark, metallic bass, light spilling like grails of milk as someone opens the mammoth shop door. A shrill, sullen truculence blows in like dust devils, the hot wind nagging my blousy overalls, and in the side yard the winch truck backfires and stalls. The sky yellows. Barn sparrows cry in the rafters. That afternoon in Dallas, Kennedy is shot.

Ford Madox Ford The English author Ford Madox Ford (1873-1939) is best known for his novels The Good Soldier and Parades End. An outstanding editor, he published works by many significant writers of his era. By the age of 22 Ford had written four books, including a fairy tale, The Brown Owl, written when he was 17 and published when he was 19. In 1898 Joseph Conrad, on the recommendation of William Ernest Henley, suggested that Ford become his collaborator, and the result was collaboration on The Inheritors (1901), Romance (1903), parts of Nostromo, and The Nature of a Crime. Fords Joseph Conrad (1924) discusses the techniques they used.In 1908 Ford began the periodical English Review in order to publish Thomas Hardys The Sunday Morning Tragedy, which had been rejected everywhere else. Other contributors included Conrad, William James, W. H. Hudson, John Galsworthy, T. S. Eliot, Robert Frost, Norman Douglas, Wyndham Lewis, H. G. Wells, D. H. Lawrence, and Anatole France. After World War I Ford founded the Transatlantic Review, which numbered among its contributors James Joyce and Ernest Hemingway.

For the past several years printing technology has been radically changing the printing industry, and while many printing companies are reluctant to invest in new, state-of-the-art equipment and software out of concern for their return on investment, Print Tech believes it is essential. Print Tech has always considered itself a leader in the quick printing area, and to grow within that arena the company understands that it must evolve within the industry. With that understanding, Print Tech is now offering its customers PrintFLEX(TM), a Web-to-print document customization technology. Print Tech has been working on this technology for the past two years and invested millions to bring its clients to the cutting edge of customized business and marketing communications. “Print Tech has developed PrintFLEX(TM), a technology that will set the benchmark for all print marketing customization, or as we like to say variable data printing on steroids,” says Russell Evans, CEO. “With traditional print, direct marketing returns of .5% to 2% are the norm. PrintFLEX(TM) customization, however, has proven results 10 times the norm and has seen response rates of over 20%. Its about helping our customers market and communicate more successfully to their current and potential clients.”

C ONTAINMENT If I was the author in 1947 of a doctrine of containment, it was a doctrine that lost much of its rationale with the death of Stalin and with the development of the Soviet-Chinese conflict. I emphatically deny the paternity of any efforts to invoke that doctrine today in situations to which it has, and can have, no proper relevance. While agreeing on the desirability of resisting communist expansion, Kennan and others disagreed on whether the doctrine remained relevant, and how and where to implement it. Their disputes have often rested on fundamental differences about the capacity of American power, about the extent of American interests beyond western Europe, and especially about the nature of the communist threat. The last issue has raised many questions. Was the threat subversion, revolution, military aggression, economic encirclement, or some combination? With the exception of Yugoslavia, was world communism controlled by Joseph Stalin even after the successful Chinese revolution in 1949? After the death of Joseph Stalin in 1953 and after the obvious Sino-Soviet split in the early 1960s, did the nature of the communist threat sometimes change, even well before the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1989#x2013;1991? At times from the early 1960s, according to the proponents of containment, was the threat primarily China and wars of national liberation in the Third World, and not the Soviet Union mostly in the developed world? Was American policy in the 1990s and continuing into the twenty-first century in dealing with Cuba, North Korea, and the Peoples Republic of China often the policy of containment?Beyond these important issues, scholars, as well as politicians and policymakers, have raised other questions: whether the doctrine in 1947 was new or necessary, whether it was ultimately self-defeating, whether it was active or passive, and whether it did or should have endured as American policy into the late 1980s and early 1990s and perhaps later. Many of the questions about containment, if it is interpreted as the general course of American foreign policy, become the basic questions about that policy itself, from Harry S. Trumans administration to the first years of President George H. W. Bushs and possibly beyond.

The franchising business model is sweeping Latin America, where investors and entrepreneurs have been quick to catch on to the benefits and opportunities. Over the past 10 years, many of the worlds most popular brands have expanded their footholds in Latin America. The market in Mexico alone grew 20% last year, well over the world average of 10%, says Schmidt, who officially represents the trade organization Asociacion Mexicana de Franquicias. Franchise operators in three key markets — Mexico, Brazil and Argentina — took in US$24.1 billion in revenues last year, according to the Federacion Iberoamericana de Franquicias, an industry group comprised of franchise associations in several countries, The goal of the association, founded in 1998, is to exchange information about government regulations, tariffs and local habits so that franchisors can more easily cross borders.

The NAPL Printing Business Index (PBI), the associations broadest measure of print activity, fell to 44.4 in March. The PBI has now been below the critical 50.0 mark–the point at which more printers report activity is slowing down than report activity is picking up–for five consecutive months. The PBI combines input from the Associations Printing Business Panel about work-on-hand, current business conditions, expected business conditions (confidence), hiring plans, profitability, and other key indicators into a single measure of activity. The NAPL Printing Business Panel is a representative group of more than 300 printers that the association surveys monthly on a range of key printing issues. Since the same companies are surveyed every time, data are strictly comparable from period to period.

Dealers increase selling space to accommodate an expanding category The interest in container gardening - which can encompass planting live goods in everything from ceramic pots to antique watering cans - has caused home centers to dedicate increased garden department selling space to products relating to container gardening and to widen price-point ranges to offer a selection that meets the needs of every level of container gardener. The interest also has been driving the development of new products that meet the unique planting needs of this kind of gardening. “The popularity of container gardening really reflects trends toward outdoor living,” said Bruce Butterfield, the research director of the National Gardening Association (NGA). Butterfield added, however, that while container gardening may seem to be on the rise, a survey conducted by NGA reveals that the number of consumers that participate in container gardening has remained steady over the last five years at 11 million U.S. households. The amount each household spends on container gardening has risen sharply, though. Retail sales of products related to container gardening — the containers, potting soil and plant food — rose to $783 million in 1998 from $441 million in 1993. The average amount spent per household on container gardens was $79 last year, vs. $44 in 1993.

There are three tiers of investment banks operating in Arkansas. The firms that do business on a nationwide basis have a strong presence in the larger cities and towns in the state. Names such as Merrill Lynch, Smith Barney, Prudential Securities, Dean Witter and Paine Webber should be familiar to most readers. Due to their size–with thousands of brokers across the country–and their financial clout, these firms stand out in the following areas: broad product line, research on national companies, broker training, and the ability to raise large amounts of capital. If you prefer to do business with companies that are headquartered a little closer to Arkansas, you still have plenty of choices. The multi-state or regional operators have captured a significant share of the Arkansas investment market. This category is represented by names such as Morgan Keegan, A.G. Edwards, Stephens and Edward D. Jones. Being close to home affords these companies the following advantages: strong research and market making for the securities of local and regional companies, and the ability and desire to raise capital for local corporations and governments. The local operators comprise the remaining tier of investment banks. This tier is split into two groups–divisions of commercial banks and independent companies. Many of the commercial banks offer investment services as a part of their trust operations. The larger banks in the state, such as First Commercial, Worthen, Twin City, Arvest and Simmons have separate investment departments that market to institutional and individual customers. A primary benefit of working with these companies is one-stop shopping or convenience.

David LodgeDavid Lodge was born on January 28, 1935, to working-class Catholic parents, William Frederick Lodge (a saxophonist and clarinetist in dance bands) and Rosalie Murphy Lodge. They lived on the outskirts of London. As a child, he lived through the darkest days of the blitz the German bombing attacks in 1940. Like many other schoolboys, he was evacuated to the countryside for the remainder of the war years. He grew up during postwar years of economic hardship. At age ten, he was enrolled in the St. Josephs Academy Catholic grammar school, and entered University College, London in 1952. He graduated with a Bachelors degree in English (with honors) in 1955 and a Masters degree in 1959. After a two-year stint in the Royal Armored Corps (1955-1957), he went on to earn a Ph.D. at the University of Birmingham and joined the English faculty in 1960. 1959 was also the year that he married Mary Frances Jacob and with whom he fathered two sons and a daughter. Lodge spent part of 1969 as a visiting professor at the University of California, Berkeley. He was assistant to the British Council in London and became Lecturer. In 1971-1973, he became Senior Lecturer and was an instructor from 1973-1976. In 1976, he was appointed professor of modern English literature at Birmingham and fellow of the Royal Society of Literature. In 1987,
he took early retirement from his university post to devote himself to his writing.Lodges first attempted novel The Devil, The World, and The Flesh focused on Catholic characters living in a small part of London. It was not published. Lodges early novels, The Picturegoers (1960) and Ginger, Youre Barmy (1962), reflect his class-consciousness and Catholicism and show the influence of Catholic novelists Graham Greene and Evelyn Waugh, as well as that of the Angry Young Men, the circle of 1950s writers who attacked the deeply-ingrained British class system. The British Museum Is Falling Down (1965), a departure from his earlier realism, is a slapstick farce on a serious ethical topicthe Roman Catholic ban on artificial birth control. The novel chronicles a day in the life of Adam Appleby, a graduate student who is preoccupied with the thought that the Vatican-approved rhythm method may have failed again and that his wife may be pregnant with their fourth child. For Adam and his wife, Roman Catholicism has been reduced to large numbers of complicated graphs, calendars, small notebooks full of figures, and quantities of broken thermometers, as if the religion offered no larger vision of faith. The novel includes a number of parodies, including a Kafkaesque run-in with the British Museum bureaucracy and a final interior monologue by Adams wife, inspired by Molly Bloom of James Joyces Ulysses. In fact, the entire novel, with its one-day time frame, urban wandering, parodies and allusions, is an homage to Joyces masterwork.Lodges fourth novel, Out of the Shelter (1970), is his most autobiographical work, based on a vacation that he spent visiting an aunt in Heidelberg in 1951. Lodge called the novel a mixture of Bildungsroman (or coming-of-age tale) and the Jamesian international novel of conflicting ethical and cultural codes. Emotionally scarred by the London blitz, the teenaged Timothy Young travels to Germany to visit his sister, who works for the U.S. Army of Occupation. There he is surprised to find, amid the ravages of war, a life of material luxury and sexual adventure. The latter forms the basis for much of the novels comedy.

One of the foremost financial writers of his generation, Peter Bernstein has the unique ability to synthesize intellectual history and economics with the theory and practice of investment management. Now, with classic titles such as Economist on Wall Street, A Primer on Money, Banking, and Gold, and The Price of Prosperity - which have forewords by financial luminaries and new introductions by the author - you can enjoy some of the best of Bernstein in his earlier Wall Street days. With the proliferation of financial instruments, new areas of instability, and innovative capital market strategies, many economists and investors have lost sight of the fundamentals of the financial system–its strengths as well as its weaknesses. A Primer on Money, Banking, and Gold takes you back to the beginning and sorts out all the pieces. Peter Bernstein skillfully addresses how and why commercial banks lend and invest, where money comes from, how it moves from hand to hand, and the critical role of interest rates. He explores the Federal Reserve System and the consequences of the Feds actions on the overall economy. But this book is not just about the past. Bernsteins novel perspective on gold and the dollar is critical for todays decision makers, as he provides extensive views on the future of money, banking, and gold in the world economy.

losing hair
November 20th, 2008
Female pattern hair loss can occur in women as early as age 20 and it affects all races and ethnicities. This type of hair loss usually comes from a genetic predisposition inherited from either side of the family tree. By age 40, visible symptoms of female pattern hair loss are present in 40% of women. Determining female pattern hair loss. A receding hair line or balding spot usually characterizes hair loss in men, but female pattern hair loss rarely displays either of these symptoms. Women instead see an overall thinning of their hair. They may notice their center part gradually getting wider, a decrease in ponytail diameter or more hair than usual in the shower drain, on the pillow, or in a hairbrush. Identifying the cause of hair loss is the key to determining the best treatment. To diagnose hair loss, dermatologists will perform a thorough history, physical exam, laboratory evaluation, and in some cases, a scalp biopsy. This relatively simple procedure usually takes place in the office under local anesthesia and involves removing a small piece of scalp for microscopic examination, which can be extremely helpful in diagnosing the type of hair loss. Treatment options. Often a dermatologists first step is to use topical minoxidil, which is available without a prescription, to treat female pattern hair loss. It is applied to the scalp twice a day and must be used for at least 4 months before the patient will see results. Minoxidil actually works to help reverse the shrinking process seen in these hair follicles and stimulates new hair growth. It has been proven to regrow hair in approximately 60% of women with female pattern hair loss, and is the only hair regrowth treatment approved by the Food and Drug Administration for use by women.
A heads up on how to hold on to and beautify those wonderful tresses The average person loses somewhere between 50 and 125 strands of hair each day as a normal part of “shedding.” This may seem like a lot, but lost hairs (including eyebrows and eyelashes) are replaced very quickly so that we barely notice their departure. Its when you begin to lose more than this number on a regular basis that you may be headed for trouble. If you find youre clogging your drain during one shower, youre probably shedding too much hair. And, if new growth doesnt seem to take place as quickly as it once did, or worse, not at all, you may become one of the 40 million men and 20 million women destined for thinning hair or pattern hair loss.

I very much appreciated Dr. Christopher J. Keats guest editorial Reflections on Chestnut Lodge, which concisely described some of the characteristics of the Lodge that made it such a unique and valuable treatment center (August 2003, p. 13). As a psychiatrist who was medical director of CPC Health when it bought Chestnut Lodge in 1996–a few years before the combined entity went bankrupt–I have two comments related to Dr. Keats editorial. Moreover, during the middle and late 1990s the Lodge was able to bill for these services effectively and was in relatively good financial shape.

THE DERBY suburb of Crewton does not exude cheap tat, so the place was understandably surprised to learn yesterday that its houses will fetch less money than any in the land. The average property price in Crewton was just pounds 29,052 last year, according to research by the financial information group Experian, published yesterday. It prompted some typically delicious north-south comparisons as the same research showed that the price of a home in St Johns Wood, north London (pounds 401,303), will buy you 14 Crewton semis. Being cheap is a double-edged sword, if Crewtons response to its new- found fame was anything to go by. For estate agents like Chris Brown of Boxall, Brown and Jones (who recently sold a two-bedroom place for pounds 14,000) it means a pounds 1,000 fixed fee can represent 5 per cent of the sale price, so “generally speaking its good to sell at that price,” he admitted. But Abdelkrim Baka wants to sell his 10-bedroom guest house on London Road and move back to Tunisia. He put it up for sale at pounds 160,000 five years ago. Yesterday he dropped it to pounds 115,000. “I bought it from my brother in 1983,” he said. “I thought he was doing me a favour.” Crewton owes its existence and its demise (prices have fallen almost 15 per cent in three years) to the railways. Rows of immaculate terraces were built for the railway workers at the turn of the century. The stone plaques set in their patterned brickwork read “Park View Villas”, “Rosamund Cottages”, “Bond Villas”. Neither is the local infant school new-build in cheap brick. “Board School, 1890″ reads the engraving on its stone wall - the kind of authenticity buyers in the south east will kill for. But authenticity means less when the British Railways Technical Centre (which made trains and wagons for BR) has closed down and hundreds of jobs have gone. Its a far cry from St Johns Wood, where prices have climbed 13.5 per cent in three years. Even that pales by comparison with Virginia Water, Surrey, where a 92.2 per cent climb between 1995 and 1998 took the average property price to pounds 268,409 last year. Other than Virginia Water and Richmond, each of the top 20 most expensive locations are in London. The 20 cheapest areas are in Yorkshire, Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Lincolnshire, Merseyside, Staffordshire and Durham. It all looks extremely gloomy for the north but in fact it is not. It is in the souths sensational climb that the bad signs lie, according to Experian. If nothing else, the figures show there is good value to be found in places like Crewton, while the souths extraordinary growth proves the spectre of negative equity is now looming. “We would be staggered to see this kind of growth continue without severe inflationary pressures,” said Bruno Rost of Experian. “There is strong potential for the bottoming out of the market and we dont want to see prices out of control. It is the north that demonstrates the most steady growth. There is huge over-capacity in the south east, with 23 per cent growth on average, while capacity does exist further north.” “Its not all breeze-blocks up here,” said one Crewton resident yesterday. “There are even plans to revive the old canal here and create a marina. Things are never as bad they sound.” Experians figures are based on the recorded price of sales, not the number of transactions. This helps explain why the notoriously pricey areas of Hampstead and Islington in north London (where most sales were relatively cheap flats or maisonettes) do not fare as well as East Sheen and Kilburn. LIVERMORE — A stretch of Vallecitos Road will be closed beginning Thursday and extending through Dec. 4 for a realignment project in the city of Livermore. .9-mile portion of East Vallecitos Road between Isabel and Vineyard avenues. Earlier this year, crews graded the area to prepare for the construction.
FMI estimates that highway construction expenditures will increase by approximately 3 percent in 2004, to a mark just shy of $64 billion. The year 2005 will be a near repeat in pace of growth, adding another $2 billion in volume put-in-place. This is slightly greater than what has been witnessed over the past two years, when growth was closer to 2 percent. It is said that timing is everything, and timing is precisely why the near-term growth outlook for highway construction falls below initial expectations. Under normal conditions, it could well be expected that 2004 and 2005 would see an increase in spending of perhaps twice as much or more than currently projected. However, the lack of a permanent federal transportation act has left the various state transportation agencies in a state of limbo and is the primary limiting factor for the industry. The previous six-year federal transportation act, TEA-21, expired on Sept. 30, 2003. Since no new bill was enacted at that time, the state transportation agencies have been operating under a series of extensions for more than nine months. The uncertainty and disruption caused by this situation has limited the planning and programming capabilities of these agencies and subsequent project letting capabilities, a condition that will continue until a permanent bill is enacted.
A 30-year-old problem may soon be solved, but whether the state Legislature has to get involved has yet to be seen. State Rep. Donald Friske, R-Merrill, testified before the Assembly Committee on Natural Resources in Madison Wednesday regarding his bill, AB 163, which would create an exemption for certain wetlands for the construction of a road located in Tomahawk. “Its difficult for me to conceive any kind of opposition to the second road,” Friske said, pointing out that he grew up near the land being looked at for the second road during his childhood and would often use it as a shortcut to town during his teen-age years. The 2.3- acre stretch is also used as a snowmobile trail.

Womens fragrance is very much a fashion business, with trends that cycle through in much the same way that hemlines rise and fall in the world of apparel. For over a decade we have been experiencing beautiful, watery, ozonic fragrances that by their very nature are cool, fleeting and ephemeral, Bonofiglio writes. The tide has turned. We are entering a season of warm fragrances. Warm in the sense of longer-lasting accords, notes which do not evaporate quickly and create a rich base aroma which moves up into the heart note of the fragrance. But hey, whats wrong with the old, uncomfortable unsafe one? Off-road icons dont come much more iconic than the all-American Jeep. After all, they invented the small, practical; fun and four wheel drive concept back in 1941. Mind you, it had a serious job to do then, keeping the infantry mobile and helping win the Second World War. So rather than taking the easy option and putting a common old Land Rover, or Far Eastern 4×4 on your drive, why not go for a classic slice of American 4×4 legend? It could fit right in with your off-road lifestyle, if you like that sort of thing. Off road it performs as it should, with style and class. There isnt much it cant handle.

First, snow is removed from the existing area far enough for two days of work. Then, dozers are used to rip up the frozen ground in small increments. Workers are careful not to rip open too much earth in case snow falls overnight and fills the holes with frost and moisture. The dozers then push fill material into the existing road and push frozen and dry material onto the road. The sheeps foot roller is then used to roll over the material to break up the frozen chunks of dirt and mix the dry and frozen material together. After a base course (the subbase layer of an asphalt roadway) is compacted, the grader is rolled over it to ensure that the road is even. The smooth-wheel roller is used to compact the top 4 to 6 inches of road. The next day, the top 2 inches of the road are final-graded, and 3 inches of well-graded #5 gravel are spread, graded, and compacted once more. While this is being done, other Soldiers grade and compact the ditches along the side and complete the finish work. This process may sound easy, but when the top 12 inches of road are frozen, it is not a simple task. The road that Task Force Eagle is working on is important to the local population for many reasons. First of all, it connects towns (over a 100-kilometer stretch) that were previously isolated from one another. This has significant economic impacts because these towns can now trade and export among each other. The road allows the small village governments to communicate and become a stronger government. The road also impacts education and health care because it is now easier to get to school or see a doctor when needed. But most importantly, Afghan local nationals are helping with the project by providing gravel, fuel, and water used in construction, which creates jobs for the local populace. In turn, the Afghan workers learn how to care and maintain the roads themselves, helping to make them autonomous once coalition forces leave the country.
Two-thirds of the 7-mile-long Hermit Road, west of Grand Canyon Village, is now closed to traffic, buses and pedestrians for major reconstruction. That closure, from Hopi Point westward, will continue through November 2008, and starting on July 7, the entire Hermit Road will be closed for construction. This $17 million reconstruction project will widen the road, improve the viewpoints and better define the walking trail. “People will be inconvenienced,” said Maureen Oltrogge, Grand Canyon spokeswoman.
Wholesale Perfume
November 20th, 2008
Customers can bring their own empty bottle or choose from Merciers collection of refillable perfume bottles and purchase the desired amount from the perfume bar.
PerfumePerfume comes from the Latin per meaning through and fumum, or smoke. Many ancient perfumes were made by extracting natural oils from plants through pressing and steaming. The oil was then burned to scent the air. Today, most perfume is used to scent bar soaps. Some products are even perfumed with industrial odorants to mask unpleasant smells or to appear unscented. While fragrant liquids used for the body are often considered perfume, true perfumes are defined as extracts or essences and contain a percentage of oil distilled in alcohol. Water is also used. The United States is the worlds largest perfume market with annual sales totalling several billions of dollars.
Although the traditional fragrance business continues to struggle in both prestige and mass market retail venues, there are signs that the category may be destined for better days. Breaking the responses down by age group, 75% of Generation Y women bought perfume in 2003 compared with 62% the year before, while Generation X purchasers increased from 60% in 2002 to 71% last year. Meanwhile, 67% of baby boomers made a perfume purchase, up from 55% in 2002. Not surprisingly, the overwhelming determiner in the purchase decision is the scent. Some industry observers have attributed the categorys recent malaise in part to the prevalence of scents that were too light to stimulate repeated purchase. But according to the Fragrance Foundation, the days of watery florals are ending, and richer, more complex fragrances are on the way.

Golfs governing bodies are to introduce a one-stroke penalty rule in an attempt to combat slow play. The words “slow play” are to appear in the rulebook for the first time from 1 January. Among the other changes coming into effect next year are ones that permit committees to make local rules to prohibit play from an environmentally sensitive area. A further amendment will deny a player relief when his stance, not the ball, is affected by casual water, ground under repair or certain damage to the course.

dog training melbourne
November 20th, 2008
As a dog trainer one of the most common things I get asked about is how to train a dog to come back when called. It is so sad that some people just cant let their dogs off the lead for fear of it taking two hours to catch the dog or, worse still, the dog running off to either be killed on the road, harass someone or never be seen again. (There are exceptions such as dogs with severe aggression problems or strong specific breed characteristics.) If a dog is dangerously out of control in a public place then the owner or the person in charge of the dog is guilty of an offence. The definition of a public place is any street, road or other place to which the public have, or are permitted to have, access. This is a wide definition of a public place and one, which specifically includes the common parts of a building containing two or more dwellings.
Police are looking for empty buildings to train dogs in. Officers particularly need premises in Sunderland, Washington and South Tyneside. They need vacant properties to use to train dogs to search premises for missing people or to locate a suspect.

The device is the Smith machine: safe, simple to use, incredibly versatile and ideal for all fitness levels. The routine, adapted from Blahniks Serious Results video (Collage video, 1999), features five powerhouse moves that work several major muscle groups at once, burning more calories than most typical weight-machine moves and delivering tremendous toning and strength benefits. To round out the program, Blahnik has also included a series of 10-minute mini cardio blasts. But theres nothing small about any part of his program — except, of course, for the time commitment. how it works Youll combine a Smith machine with a flat bench. The commercial version of Jeeps Cherokee gets a range of improvements for 2005, making it a much-improved all-round performer. Key to the enhancements is a new 2.8-litre diesel engine to replace the current 2.5-litre unit. This improves the vehicles pulling power to such an extent that the payload increases by more than 20kg to 380kg and the maximum towing weight rises by 660kg to a new high of 3,360kg.
For improved handling, you can thank five-link rear suspension, independent front suspension and a first-ever rack-and-pinion steering system, along with an Electronic Stability Program (ESP–get it?) that uses sensors to adjust the brake and throttle for optimum control in tricky conditions. Welcome back, Jeep. * AVAILABLE this fall. For more information, visit jeep.com.

Although it may seem antithetical to progress, pulling back occasionally on the intensity of your workouts can actually be beneficial, especially when work or personal obligations cut into the time you normally allot for the gym. Periodically training with less intensity gives your muscles, tendons and joints a chance to rebuild and recover, much like a vacation from work gives your body and mind a chance to reenergize explains William Finney, a certified personal trainer in Washington, D.C. Next time you find yourself crunched for time, try this 10-minute total-body workout, designed by Troy De Mond, owner of Fitness on the Move Lifestyle Center in Fort Myers, Fla., as a means of maintaining what youve worked so hard for. Perform the routine at least two or three times a week with a days rest between each session, but for no more than four weeks, after which you should return to training with your regular intensity. Dont be surprised if youre actually stronger following your working vacation.

Starting an exercise programme is the easy bit, keeping it going takes a bit of incentive. Try these methods to help stay motivated: 1. Train with someone. Having an arrangement with someone means you are less likely to skip a session, even if the weathers terrible. 2. Schedule exercise into the weeks ahead. If you make diary entries to commit to specific classes or sessions, you are more likely to go. 3. Relieve boredom. If you are counting the seconds or number of reps until you are finished, try to focus on something else. Listen to some music or a language tape.

IT is hardly surprising there is a growing crisis in social housing with no new council homes having been built for two decades. Soaring property prices coupled with fewer homes available has led to local authorities being unable to meet demand. And regenerating existing stock cannot be done quickly enough to ease the problem in the short term.

An arched window situated just above the garden tub in this master bath left the space bathed in light but devoid of privacy. The homeowners-Elaine and Bob Jackson of Alpharetta, Georgia-wanted the sense of seclusion without losing the natural light and airy ambience provided by the window. A pair of custom-built louvered shutters proved perfect for the window. The Georgian Company, a local shutter shop, measured and designed the shutters for the Jacksons bath. “The critical part of interior shutters is the measuring and knowing how youre going to hang them,” says the shops owner, Bob Gard. “If theyre measured right, they fit like a glove,” he explains. The shutters mount inside the window frame. An outside mount is preferable if you want your windows to appear bigger or if you want to hide an unattractive one, while an inside mount gives a more finished appearance.

Tighten thighs and buttocks by standing with you chair in front of you. Hold back of the chair, keep feet hip distance apart and ensure your hips and shoulders are above one another. Lower your bum as if sitting. Hold for five seconds and squeeze the buttocks. Repeat 15 times. Using a stable chair, place your hands next to your hips at the edge (fingers facing forwards) and move hips to the edge of the chair. Bend elbows back (not to side), lowering your body until the line of your hips and knees is at 90 degrees to the chair. Repeat ten times Try push-ups, sitting in your chair twisting from the waist. Incorporate weights by using water bottles to do biceps curls and straight arm lifts.
This is an exercise to help “get in touch” with the neutral spine. Lie on your back, bend the knees and place the feet flat on the floor about six inches in front of the sitting bones. Place the arms by your sides, palms down. Without tilting the pubic bone and tailbone up, try to press the length of the back into the flat surface. At the same time, contract the abdominal muscles down towards the spine. Feel as though you are pulling the belly button inwards. Do these last movements while exhaling through the mouth, with a “haaah” or a “ssshhhh” sound to help access the abdominal muscles. Feel the lower ribs pressing down and spreading. When you exhale, dont let the back lift or arch. Once you feel the muscles you are trying to isolate, any abdominal work done will be more effective.
